MDF moisture-proof primed: what is it?

MDF moisture-resistant is a widely usable board that is suitable for various indoor panelling applications where the area is damp, such as in the bathroom and in the kitchen. It is also known as MDF V313. The V313 characteristic comes from the test for moisture resistance that the board undergoes, which is called V313. It indicates that the board is not only moisture resistant, but also water and mould resistant. Please note that the board is not waterproof! Moisture-resistant MDF boards are made of dried wood fibres and glue. These wood fibres are then pressed together under high pressure and temperatures to form an MDF board. In the case of MDF moisture-resistant, a special moisture-resistant adhesive is used. To enhance the moisture resistant properties, the material is pressed under a higher pressure compared to MDF clear. Due to the extra hard pressing, this wood species is easy to process. Damp-proof MDF boards can be recognised by their green core. If you wish to work with a 'blank sheet' that is moisture-resistant, go for MDF moisture-resistant. MDF Moisture Resistant V313 is not suitable for outdoor use.

This moisture-resistant variant is provided with a primer on both sides, which makes priming the material unnecessary and allows you to immediately start working with the desired paint colour. It is therefore very suitable for making indoor furniture that you want to paint and when you want to get started quickly with your job. MDF is one of the most popular types of board material. This is because it is very easy to process and also very affordable.

You do not know which MDF variant is right for you, but are you planning to paint or lacquer your project? Then go for primed or lacquer-bearing MDF. Primed MDF has a somewhat rougher top layer compared to lacquer-bearing MDF. It is important to sand this board material well before finishing. Due to the sanding, degreasing is less important, but this may also be necessary. The edges of this board material are not finished and do not have this white layer. Finish the edges with an edge sealer before painting the board. Are you going to spray your board material? Then MDF with a lacquer coating is the best choice.

MDF primed is a constructional board. This means that this board material requires the necessary finishing before it can be used for visible work. Pay extra attention to the edges, as these are 'open' and therefore extra sensitive. This board is not suitable for applications in damp spaces or outdoors.

Primed top layer

MDF moisture-proof primed, the name says it all, is finished with a primer layer. Board material with a primed top layer offers immediate time savings and an improved finish, as the material is already pre-treated. Moreover, it is cost-saving. It is a practical and efficient choice when you want to finish your project quickly. However, bear in mind that the edges are not finished and the primer layer still needs to be sanded.

In principle, board material with a primer coating can be painted immediately. It is suitable for all paints: acrylic (water-based) and alkyd (turpentine-based). Do you want to enjoy your paintwork for longer or will the surface be used intensively? Then first apply a primer layer before applying the final coat.

Available thicknesses of MDF moisture-proof V313 primed

You can order moisture-resistant MDF boards online in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness in the product configurator. This way, you can be sure that the board material meets your requirements: both the format and the thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 12 mm and 18 mm.

Machining of MDF moisture-resistant boards

MDF is very easy to process: when milling and sawing, the material does not splinter. To do justice to the moisture-resistant properties of moisture-resistant MDF, it is important to seal the board properly. The top and bottom sides can be sealed with a primer or a lacquer coating. The ends deserve some extra attention. MDF fibres have an inherent absorbing effect. In the case of MDF moisture-resistant this is less than in the case of MDF untreated, but it is still important to treat these with an edge sealer. Moreover, primer acts as an adhesive, as a result of which the final lacquer layer will look nicer.

Specific applications of MDF moisture-proof primed

MDF is the material of choice for furniture and interior applications. This can be a cupboard, a wall or a complete casing. With this moisture-resistant variant, the furniture is also suitable for the bathroom, garage or kitchen. Examples of projects are a bathroom cabinet, a kitchen cabinet, a partition wall in the bathroom or a window sill.
