Order cut-to-size MDF film sheets online
Easily order cut-to-size MDF film online. MDF can be cut or milled to size in various shapes. The most commonly chosen shape is a rectangle, but we also mill circles, ovals, hexagons or even parallelograms See all available shapes for this sheet material below in the product configurator. In addition to sawing the material to size with millimetre accuracy, you can also have the sheet material finished with various (edge) finishes. For example, you can easily order MDF with a mitred edge. This makes the assembly of your project even easier.
MDF film: what is it?
MDF is one of the most popular types of wooden sheets. This is because it is easy to process and also affordable. MDF Film, as the name suggests, is provided on both sides with a lacquer-carrying film that eliminates the need to prime the material. The film is on the top and bottom of the sheet. So, it is very suitable for making furniture for indoor use that you want to paint. MDF Film is also known under the names lacquer-carrying MDF, MDF Lacquer Film or MDF Grundier.
Don't know which MDF variant is right for you, but are you planning on painting or lacquering your project? Then opt for MDF primed or MDF film. MDF film has a hard and smooth top layer compared to primed MDF. You do not need to sand this sheet material for the first layer, but the smooth top layer makes degreasing all the more important! Then you can easily paint this sheet material with a roller. Are you going to spray your sheet? Then MDF film is the best choice for you! The edges of this sheet material are not finished and do not have this white layer. Finish the edges with an edge sealer before you start painting the sheet.
MDF film is a structural sheet. This means that this sheet material still needs the necessary finishing before it can be used for visual applications. MDF film is not suitable for applications in humid rooms or outdoors.
Lacquer-carrying film top layer
MDF fire retardant film, the name says it all, is finished with a thin lacquer-carrying film layer that acts as a primer. So it is actually a primer! Because the finish is very smooth, only light sanding is required. Degreasing the material is more important. It is a practical and efficient choice when you want to complete your project quickly and cost-effectively. However, bear in mind that the edges are not finished and still need extra attention.
In principle, board material with a paint-carrying film layer can be painted directly. It is suitable for all paints: acrylic (water-based) and alkyd (turpentine-based). Do you want to enjoy your paintwork for longer or will the surface be used intensively? Then first apply a primer coat before applying the final paint layer.
Available thicknesses of MDF Film
MDF film can be ordered in different thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 9 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 19 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm, 28 mm, 30 mm and 38 mm.
Machining MDF film sheets
MDF is easy to work with: when milling and sawing, the material does not splinter. Pre-drilling is not necessary, only recommended. Do you want to conceal your screws? Then countersink the screw holes and seal the holes after assembly. The film allows the finishing process to start immediately. Do the sheet edges have to be lacquered as well? These require some extra attention. To counteract the absorbent effect of the sheet edges, it is important to finish the sheet edges with an edge sealer before painting them.
Specific applications of MDF film
MDF is the material of choice for furniture and interior applications. The homogeneous structure makes MDF less sensitive to shrinkage and expansion at varying temperatures compared to other sheet materials. The top layer makes it an easy-to-apply sheet material for things like tables, wall shelves, furniture, desks, etc. In short, do you want to paint your project in your colour? Then choose MDF film.
